While working at The Villages Daily Sun, I ran across a story of a local individual who saved the life of a stranger through a kidney donation. This led to the discovery of an organ shortage reaching crisis proportions, especially for the nation's senior population. I chronicled the issue as the industry considered its first policy changes in decades.
This journey took me from the transplant recovery unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Houston Texas Transplant Games of America to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and the University of Florida Health in Gainesville.
I had the great opportunity to walk alongside transplant recipients and donors while documenting their triumphant stories and seeing the smiles as well as the tears. I connected with a local family whose father was waiting for a liver transplant, sat down with medical professionals to gain their insights on the issues facing organ donation, documented one man’s journey as he competed in the Transplant Games of America, and captured the story of a dad who lost his son in an accident and his organs saved the lives of five people.
